About Us

Traditional Yoga Studies (TYS) is dedicated to promoting authentic yogic teachings and solid research, and to bringing out their relevance in all aspects of life in the 21st century. We offer online courses, trainings, workshops, and classes.

TYS has grown

out of Georg Feuerstein’s Yoga Research and Education Center,

and Education Center,

which he founded in 1996 and directed until 2003. However, TYS represents an entirely independent effort, registered as a business in Canada in 2004. Since the sudden passing of Georg in 2012, TYS is directed by his wife and spiritual partner, Brenda Feuerstein, along with her daughter, Chandra Schlitz, serving as assistant director.

Brenda L. Feuerstein is the founder and director of Traditional Yoga Studies which is a Canadian company whose primary focus is promoting authentic yogic teachings and research, and to bringing out their relevance in all aspects of life in the 21st century. Brenda is an author and co-author of several books on Yoga philosophy, social and environmental activism, and poetry and is actively translating sacred texts from a unique feminine perspective. She travels internationally and offers online programs as a Yoga educator leading trainings, retreats, workshops, classes and lectures, and her passion is finding ways to bring the yogic teachings to life in today’s world through the lens of the Divine feminine.

She trained intensively in Yoga philosophy (Hindu, Buddhist and Jain), asana, pranayama, meditation, Yoga-nidrā, Sanskrit for nine years with her late husband and spiritual partner, Dr. Georg Feuerstein, and other teachers worldwide in the areas of meditation, prānāyāma, Yoga-nidrā, philosophy, Sanskrit, Pali, and Tibetan as well as postural Yoga over the course of 35 years. Brenda has studied several types of meditation and has been a meditation practitioner for over 30 years.

She currently runs online meditation, Yoga-nidrā, prāṇāyāma, Ayurveda, mantra, mudrā, and Kum Nye Yoga programs as well as in-person and online trainings. Brenda is trained in Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga with Dharma Publishing in the USA, Kriya-Yoga with Babaji’s Kriya Yoga in Canada, Somatic Yoga with Eleanor Criswell and the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and Buddhist studies with her teacher, The 9th Neten Rinpoche as well as with Dr. Robert Thurman.

Brenda continues her academic studies in Psychology, Buddhist Studies, Sowa Rigpa: Traditional Tibetan Medicine, Somatics, and Death and Dying from cultural and religious/spiritual perspectives as well as continuing her research into applications of mind-body practices and grief.

Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D. became interested in Yoga in his early teens and has increasingly studied Yoga philosophy and history since then. He did his postgraduate studies in England and has authored over 50 books—not all on Yoga and including a couple of poetic titles. His major works are The Encyclopedia of Yoga and Tantra (Shambhala 2011), The Yoga Tradition (Hohm Press 2008), Yoga Morality (Hohm Press, 2007), The Deeper Dimension of Yoga (Shambhala), The Bhagavad-Gītā: A New Translation (Shambhala 2011), and Yoga Sūtra of Patañjali (Inner Traditions, 1989)

Georg created several distance learning courses, which are made available through TYS, his wife’s Canadian educational company. He officially went into semiretirement in 2004. But in 2011, he agreed to make himself available in a TYS mentorship program to encourage those who are seriously interested in digging deeper into Yoga philosophy. In 2012, Georg nominated his wife, Brenda, as the tutor for all TYS courses and the mentorship program.

Georg A. Feuerstein lived a profoundly productive life of humble service and made a peaceful, conscious exit from this world on Saturday, August 25, 2012 near their home in Southern Saskatchewan, due to complications from diabetes. His final transition occurred after a 9-day journey of loving resolution in which he was surrounded and supported by his wife Brenda and many spiritual friends.

His legacy of scholarly contribution to the global Yoga community is vast and awe inspiring, to which we all owe a huge debt of gratitude. His work will be lovingly continued and directed by his beloved partner, lover, friend, and wife, Brenda Feuerstein.

For those who ask what they can do to honor Georg, the request is a simple one: put into practice the teachings of Yoga that Georg spent his life exploring and interpreting for our benefit and understanding.

In ancient times, the yogin looked to the natural world and within themselves to cultivate understanding in their goal of self realization; today, we have the benefit of books that transmit the teachings, channeled through brilliant minds such as Georg’s. When you pick up such a book…say a prayer of gratitude for the life and time of Georg that lives on through his publishings.

Tread lightly on this Earth. Be kind to all creatures. Live simply. Consume less. Avoid air travel when possible. Find alternatives to car travel. Delight in a vegetarian diet. Grow your own food if possible. Use water sparingly. Lobby for a kinder, healthier world.
